Updated 2026: Since Solar Package I (May 16, 2024), registration has become significantly simpler. For plug-and-play balcony power plants up to 800 W, a single step is now sufficient: registration in the market master data register. A separate registration with the grid operator is no longer required. You can find the detailed, current click-by-click instructions here: Registering a Balcony Power Plant 2026 – MaStR Step-by-Step.
Registering a Balcony Power Plant in the Market Master Data Register – Here's How
If you own a balcony power plant, you must register it in the Market Master Data Register (MaStR) of the Federal Network Agency. Here's a step-by-step guide:
Step 1: Create Access to the Market Master Data Register
To register your balcony power plant, you first need a user account. Register on the Federal Network Agency's website (marktstammdatenregister.de) and select "Natural Person" as the account type if you operate the system privately.
Step 2: Collect Balcony Power Plant Data
Before you start, gather the most important data: module output (in Wp), inverter output (in W), location/address, commissioning date, and the meter number of your electricity meter.
Step 3: Start Registration
After logging in, click on "Registration of a system or a market actor," then on "Registration of a solar system," and select the type "Plug-and-play solar system / balcony power plant." The register will automatically guide you to the simplified form.
Step 4: Provide System Information
Enter the previously collected data: location, commissioning date, module output, inverter output, and meter number.
Step 5: Complete Registration
Complete the registration and download the PDF confirmation and your registration number – this is your proof. Important: An additional registration with the grid operator is no longer necessary since Solar Package I – the grid operator is automatically informed via the MaStR.
Conclusion: Registration in the Market Master Data Register can now be completed in 15–20 minutes, is free, and can be done without an electrician. It must be done within one month of commissioning.
