From 2023, VAT will no longer apply to balcony power plants

The VAT exemption applies to PV systems that are installed on or near residential buildings from January 1, 2023 and feed in less than 30 kW. The tax exemption also applies to system components such as inverters and battery storage systems as well as to extensions to existing PV systems.
The tax exemption cannot be refunded retroactively for systems installed before January 1, 2023.
What tax considerations need to be taken into account when purchasing a balcony power plant in 2023?
From January 1, 2023, no sales tax will be due on the purchase of a balcony power plant or on new system components, provided they are installed near a residential building. From this year, sales tax will also no longer apply to the feed-in of solar power from systems in residential buildings. However, this only applies if the operator waives the application of the small business regulation.
Example calculation:
- Until December 31, 2022: Balcony power plant costs 900 euros including 19 percent VAT.
- From January 1, 2023: Balcony power plant costs 756.30 euros excluding VAT.
