In short: Since Solar Package I (May 16, 2024), you only need to register a plug-in balcony power plant with up to 800 W inverter output at one place: the Federal Network Agency's Market Master Data Register (MaStR). This takes 15–20 minutes, is free of charge, and can be done without an electrician. The previously required separate registration with the grid operator is no longer necessary – the grid operator is informed automatically.

Do I even need to register my balcony power plant?

Yes. Even the smallest balcony power plant is legally subject to registration. The good news: Since Solar Package I, the former bureaucratic marathon has become a single, simple online step. You register your system once in the Market Master Data Register – nothing more needs to be done.

This simplified registration applies to plug-in solar systems (plug-in solar / balcony power plant) with:

  • an inverter output of maximum 800 W and
  • an installed module capacity of maximum 2,000 Wp (2 kWp).

Before you start, have the following data ready – then you'll be done in under 20 minutes:

  1. Location: Postal code and address where the system will be operated
  2. Commissioning date: the day your balcony power plant generated electricity for the first time
  3. Module output in Wp: total output of your solar modules (e.g., 900 Wp)
  4. Inverter output in W: the output power of your inverter (e.g., 800 W)
  5. Meter number: the number of your electricity meter (10–20 digits, found directly on the meter's display or type plate)

Tip: Module and inverter output can be found on the data sheet or conformity declaration included with every DRBO set.

Step-by-step: Registering your balcony power plant in the MaStR

Step 1 – Create a user account (approx. 5 min.)

Open www.marktstammdatenregister.de/MaStR and click on "Register". Select "Natural person" as the account type if you are operating the system privately. Enter your email address, set a password, and confirm the email via the link sent to you. Your account is active immediately.

Step 2 – Start registering your system (approx. 2 min.)

After logging in, click on "Registration of a plant or a market participant" and then on "Registration of a solar plant". Then select the type "Plug-in solar plant / Balcony power plant". The register will automatically guide you to the simplified form – you don't have to click through the extensive PV system mask.

Step 3 – Enter technical data (approx. 5 min.)

Now enter the 5 pieces of information from the checklist:

  • Location (postal code & address)
  • Commissioning date
  • Module output in Wp
  • Inverter output in W (max. 800)
  • Meter number

Optionally, you can give your system a display name (e.g., "South Balcony Power Plant") – this will help you later if you manage multiple systems.

Step 4 – Download confirmation (approx. 1 min.)

Complete the registration. The MaStR will immediately generate a registration number and a PDF confirmation. Download and save both – this is your proof. You no longer need to inform the grid operator separately; the register will do this automatically.

Done. Your balcony power plant is now correctly registered. In total: 15–20 minutes, 0 €, no electrician.

Special case: Balcony power plant with storage

If you have combined your set with a battery storage unit (e.g., a SunEnergyXT BK215 PLUS or one of our complete sets with storage), the storage unit is registered as an additional unit in the same MaStR account. The process is identical – you only additionally select the unit "Electricity storage". This is also free of charge and completed in a few minutes.

Deadline & Penalty: What happens if I don't register?

Registration must take place within one month of commissioning. Legally, a fine is possible for failure to report. In practice, private operators have not yet been sanctioned for this – nevertheless, you should not delay registration: it is free, quick, and ensures legal operation.
